My Homemade Formula Recipe

Portrait of Victoria M.
Victoria M. Traditional Naturopath

I'm a traditional naturopath (graduated from Trinity School of Natural Health in 2018) and I created this recipe based on existing recipes that have been published in various places after looking at each option and feeling that most of them were either too expensive, too time consuming to make, or required ingredients that were too difficult to source. I have used this recipe, and similar recipes for the last 7 years with all of my children due to having a severe case of hypoplasia.

You are responsbile for any decisions you make regarding the health and wellness of your family. This recipe is for educational and informational purposes only and to share what has worked for me and my family; it is not intended to replace medical advice or care. Please consult your preferred health care provider for any and all medical concerns.

If you would like professional traditional naturopathic advice my consultation options and services are listed on my website - all "Mamas After Midnight" and "Toxin Free Living" Facebook group members receive a one time $5 discount if they schedule any consult with me after July 15th.

Additional information

I do not have a 6+ month recipe because all of my children begin eating table foods at 6 months - if they did not I probably would create an updated formula recipe or at the very least add 1 raw egg yolk per recipe.

MILK: I used raw cow's milk and goat's when possible, if not, I've used low-temp pasteurized organic milk; in a pinch I would be willing to use conventional milk if no other options exist; it is possible to add 1 tbsp yogurt or kefir to 1 cup of milk for better digestion (if I were to do this, I would omit the colloidal silver).

COD OIL: My preferred brand is Nordic Naturals.

BONE BROTH RATIO: I made bone broth with 4oz bones to 2 cups water, simmered for 3+ hours; I cooked this down as much as possible and added water as needed for the recipe.

LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL: My preferred brand is Nature’s Sunshine (mint flavor).

MILK POWDER: I have used goat’s and cow's milk powder interchangeably.

COLLOIDAL SILVER: I use colloidal sliver to prevent bacterial contamination and support baby's immune system - I would omit if I were to give baby probiotics. Any brand of colloidal silver I have found to be typically fine, I have most often used Sovereign Silver but I much prefer to brew my own at home.

CHAMOMILE TEA: In the past I have added the equivalent of 5 - 10 drops of organic chamomile tea with each bottle to promote better digestion.

DIGESTION: If I were to notice difficulties with digestion I would take a look at root cause - I have used homeopathic chamomilla 30c, chamomile tea drops, probiotics, and other nutritional supplements depending on several factors. Addressing alignment issues with osteopathic or chiropractic care may also be helpful in addition to making sure baby is positioned well during feedings and is adequately burped. For dairy sensitivities I would not recommend continuing to use a dairy based formula unless the root cause is addressed.
